Varkala Beach - Also called Papanasam Beach
Unlike Kovalam Beach, the Varkala beach is a quiet affair, yet popular among the travellers. Considered as one of the top ten seasonal beaches in the world by discovery channel, the beach stands to its credit. It is not just a tourist location availing facilities for sunbathing, boat riding, swimming, adventure sports and ayurvedic treatments, the place is also famous for the Hindu community. A legend goes like this that Saint Narada was met by a group of sages who had sinned. Narada asked those sages to come to Varkala and directed his devotees to offer prayers at the beach. They did as per his words and were relieved from the sins. So, this place is known as 'Papanasam' meaning redemption from sins.
Janardhana Swami Temple, which lies in the direction of Varkala beach is a famous religious site. This holy shrine is believed to be constructed 2000 years ago. Mythologically, the Janardhana Swami Temple was built by a Pandyan ruler after lord Brahma forgave a sin committed by him. He was told about the idol and its location. With the help of some fishermen, the king took out the deity and thus the temple was formed. Shining white sands, cloudless skies, paddy fields, and coconut trees make a composite picture of the beauty of nature. It is a perfect spot to relax with a laid back atmosphere. Varkala lighthouse is one among the ideal spots from which you can get the complete view of the surroundings. The lighthouse constructed by the British in the 18th century is a historic building which depicts the colonial style of architecture.
