Thiruvarur Tourism - Also called "Kamalaalayashetra"

The historic name of the town was โ€˜Aarurโ€™, and has credibility in the 7th century Savaite canonical work, โ€˜Thevaramโ€™. The term โ€˜Thiruโ€™ is added later which gives respect to the divinity of that place, resulting in Thiruvarur. It is also called as โ€˜Kamalaalayashetraโ€™, meaning the โ€˜abode of holy lotusโ€™. It is also due to the presence of the Kamalalayam tank and the temple deity, Kamalambigai. Earliest known king Kulothunga Chola had this place as his capital. The town was ruled by the Medieval Cholas, Pandyas, Vijayanagar Empire, Marathas and finally the British. Manu Needhi Cholan, who killed his own son to provide justice for a cow, was one of the notable rulers of this region. The town was briefly captured by French troops in 1759. After independence, Thiruvarur continued to be a part of the Thanjavur and Nagapattinam districts till 1991 and 1997 respectively. It was carved out in 1997 to become a separate district. Thiruvarur lies in the Cauvery river basin and the main occupation here is agriculture.
