TOURIST ATTRACTIONS:
Mattupetty Lake located 13 km (8 miles) north of Munnar, is surrounded by lovely semi alpine scenery. A specialized cattle-breeding centre is located nearby.

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary : This bird sanctuary in Devikulam Taluk lies on the northern bank of the Periyar river. The area of the sanctuary is 25 sq km formed between the branches of the River Periyar. The presence of more than 200 varieties of birds in this area attracted the world renowned Orinthologist Dr. Salim Ali whose efforts are also believed to be used in the formation of this sanctuary. Important birds found here include large falcon, gray junglefowl, white breasted water hen, hornbill etc.
Pathanmedu located 6km from Munnar provides an excellent view of plantations; Pallivasal (8Km) for Hydro-electric projects; Attukal (9km) and Nyayamakad (10km) for water falls.
Top Station: Top station is yet another attraction of Munnar. This hill top is 32km south east of Munnar and 1700 metres above sea level. From top station, we get a panoramic view of Kambam in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu. Top Station is along the Munnar Kodaikkanal road. Through there is a short cut, it is not accessible even by jeep. During the time of the British rule, for transportation of tea and manpower, they had constructed a rope way as well as a mini local rail line. This was later destroyed by natural calamities but the remains are still left. Neela k k urinji (Strobilanthus): The Neelakkurinji is a plant that blooms once in 12 years. Marayoor: This town is 40km from Munnar and is the only place in Kerala where one gets to see a sandal forest. To visit the forest, one must get permission from the forest authorities. Other major attractions are the Forest Department's Sandal Wood Factory, caves and children's park. The Rajiv Gandhi National Park and Thoovanam waterfalls are the other attractions nearby Eravikulam-Rajamalai Wildlife Sanctuary (15km from Munnar Town) : Eravikulam is another wildlife sanctuary proclaimed as a National park since it supports the largest population of Nilgiri Tahr existing in the world now. Anamudi peak, the highest point (2695 mtr.) is located in the southern region of this park. The park is 144 km from Cochin and is accessible by road.
Chithirapuram: Home of the Pallivasal Hydel Power Project, this hill town is also famous for its picturesque tea plantations. (10 km from Munnar) Kundala (20 km from Munnar):
Kundala is a picturesque town on the way to Top Station. The Golf Course which belongs to Tata Tea Ltd. is located here. The Kundala artificial dam is another attraction. Aruvikkad Waterfall is also near Kundala.
