Se Cathedral Church

One of the largest Church in Asia...

This church is dedicated to St.Catherine of Alexandria in 1510. It is one of the largest Cathedral in Asia and also the oldest and sacred building of Goa. This was declared as the UNESCO heritage site.

The architecture is Portuguese-Gothic and the exterior is Tuscan and the interior is Corinthian. This church depicts the history of the Goa's colonial past. This church was built to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese under Alfonso Albuquerque over the muslim army in 1510. The day of the victory happened to be on the feat of Saint Catherine, the cathedral was dedicated to her.

The construction of the church began in 1569, was completed in 1619 and was consecrated in 1640. This church had two towers, but one collapsed in 1776 and was never rebuilt. The main altar is dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria and there are several old paintings on either side of it.
