In the 16th century,Christianity was introduced by the Portuguese. There are many breathtaking churches are found at Old Goa. Basilica of Bom Jesus is the legendary church, which preserves the sacred remains of St.Francis Xavier and this church has been declared a World Heritage Monument.
The church is located in Old Goa and considered to be one of the best example of baroque architecture in India. Bom Jesus literally means "Holy Jesus or Good Jesus", the name of the Infant Jesus. The construction work of this church began in 1594 and was consecrated in 1605.
Francis Xavier died in Sancian island while enroute to Continental China in 1552. The body of Francis Xavier was taken to Malacca and two years later shipped back to Goa.
The remains of the Saint attract huge number of devotees especially during the public viewing of his body every ten years (last held in 2004).
The saint is said to have miraculous power of healing. The floor is of marble inlaid with precious stones. The Basilica of Bom Jesus is more than 400 years old and is open to the public every day. The body of St.Francis Xavier is kept in a well-decorated casket.
